Faith of a Child

Last night we went to an Open House at Addie’s school.  It was great to get to see all the work she has been doing in school!  We got to look at a book she had made on geckos.  She had researched geckos, brainstormed, written sentences, typed and printed them, glued on pictures, made pages such as title page…dedication…about the author and even had it bound.  She was really excited about it and we loved seeing it!  But I must say the highlight of the evening was seeing her hero project that hung in the hallway.  Each student had written a few sentences describing their hero and drawn a picture to go along.  So who did Addie pick…  Addie picked God!!  There Brian and I stood in a public school hallway reading our daughter’s words about her hero who loves her and offers eternal life.  It brought tears to my eyes!!  You might wonder what you should draw for a picture of God.   Addie says a big light of course!

It is a thrill to watch our girls faith grow and develop!  Yesterday Emma collected a few missionary pictures at church and asked me if that was ok.  I told her yes but that they were to help people to remember to pray for them so it would be good to pray for the families she picked out.  When we got home she looked over the pictures over and over and then prayed for each one.

The faith of children is like a drink of bubbling fizzy cold coke.  It tastes oh so good and tickles your upper lip in the process.

Great comparison about a child’s faith and drinking soda (especially a Coca-Cola product.) Everytime I hear a story like these or see a child express their faith in God, it just confirms for me the truth of Matthew 18 where Jesus uses the example of the humility of a child to talk about who will gain His kingdom. I wish that I could gain back just a bit of the faith I see expressed in the lives of kids. It is also a great reminder of the importance of really spending quality time with our children. It is ironic how God has given us the responsibility as parents to raise and teach our children, but so often we are the ones that learn from them. Thanks for sharing this story, looking forward to hearing others as our kids continue to keep us focused on Him.

Wonderfully moving! And the icy cold coke reminds me of Peter Jenkin’s book “A Walk West” (sequel to “A Walk Across America”) where he describes having one with his new bride in a little Cajun Gumbo joint a little west of New Orleans. The waitress there said they had to have a bottle of really icy bottled coke to “go with ‘dem ‘dere shrimps!”

And I will look forward to seeing both the gecko and hero book and drawings this summer during my visit. Love to all – Grampy

way to go Addie! and way to go Daddy and Mommy for the consistency of development. Is it possible for a child to know God personally outside of the caring leadership of a parent? I’m not sure, it would seem to me that everything in our culture tends to push people inward, to look after themselves and yet you guys are going upstream encouraging your kids to look to God first…thanks!
